EDITORS COMMENTS
On April 17, 1912, a grand and ceremonial event took place in Washington, D.C., marking the unveiling of the John Paul Jones Memorial. Surrounded by lush greenery and adorned with American flags, a large crowd gathered to pay tribute to the legendary naval hero. Among the esteemed attendees were Admiral George Dewey, US President William Howard Taft, and Secretary of War Henry Lewis Stimson. Admiral Dewey, a renowned naval commander, stood proudly alongside President Taft and General Porter as they prepared to unveil the monument dedicated to John Paul Jones. Jones, a Scottish-born American naval officer, is best known for his role in the American Revolution and for his famous quote, "I have not yet begun to fight." The event was captured by Harris & Ewing, a prominent photographic studio of the time. The studio, founded by George H. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze, was known for its high-quality glass negatives and produced numerous images documenting American history. This photograph, taken on that historic day in 1912, is a testament to the studio's legacy and the enduring importance of John Paul Jones in American military and naval history.
