Known as Oom (uncle) Paul, Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904) was President of the Transvaal or South African Republic from 1883. In the 2nd Boer War (1899-1900), Kruger was too old and unwell to take an active role in the field and he moved to the Netherlands.
