Stephanus Johannes Paulus, also known as Paul Kruger, was a prominent South African political figure during the late 19th century. Born in 1825, Kruger served as President of the Transvaal Republic from 1883 to 1888 and again from 1898 to 1900. This charismatic leader is depicted in various photographs and paintings, including at President Kruger's Country House around 1880, during the Second Boer War in 1900, and even as a double portrayed by John Mutch in 1900. Kruger's image as a fierce defender of Boer independence is immortalized in works such as Maurice Denis's "The New Pretoria" and Sweeton Tilly's depiction of Kruger in the 1880s. Despite the eventual defeat of the Boer forces, Kruger's legacy as a symbol of resistance and determination lives on.
