Quante-Cong, also known as Shangdi, was the first ruler and supreme god in Chinese mythology. This handcoloured copperplate drawing and engraving by Andrea Bernieri, from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy in 1843, offers a visual representation of the revered deity. Quante-Cong is depicted as an elderly man with a regal and majestic appearance, wearing a traditional Chinese robe adorned with intricate patterns and symbols. His head is crowned with a tall, ornate headdress, signifying his divine status. In one hand, he holds a scepter, symbolizing his power and authority, while in the other, he holds a tablet inscribed with ancient Chinese characters, representing his role as the supreme ruler of the universe. The Chinese believed that Quante-Cong created the world and ruled over it with benevolence and wisdom. He was also considered the ancestor of all Chinese emperors, making him an important figure in Chinese history and culture. This illustration provides a glimpse into the rich and complex mythology of ancient China, showcasing the reverence and awe the Chinese people held for their gods and rulers.
