Rock Mill with Treffry Viaduct / Aqueduct in the background, Luxulyan, Cornwall. 1909
The photograph is taken from above the Great Western Railway Par to Newquay branch line cutting, looking north. Rock Mill can be seen on the left of the photograph, with a telegraph pole and wires, running alongside the railway line that can be glimpsed at the bottom left. A lady with a child can just be discerned in the field on the lower right of the photograph. The Treffry viaduct/aqueduct can be seen further up the Luxulyan Valley. The viaduct was built between 1839 and 1842 by its owner Joseph Thomas Treffry. This viaduct, 90 feet high and 670 feet long, had the dual purpose of carrying both a tramway and a high level leat across the Luxulyan Valley. It was the first large civil engineering structure of its kind to be built in Cornwall, and it is now a Scheduled Monument. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a picturesque scene of Rock Mill with the magnificent Treffry Viaduct/Aqueduct in the background. Taken in 1909, the photograph offers a glimpse into Cornwall's rich industrial history. From an elevated perspective above the Great Western Railway Par to Newquay branch line cutting, we are transported back in time. On the left side of the image stands Rock Mill, its rustic charm evident even from this distance. A telegraph pole and wires run alongside the railway line at the bottom left, showcasing technological advancements of that era. Intriguingly, our eyes are drawn to a lady with a child standing amidst lush fields on the lower right corner of the photograph. They provide a sense of scale and human presence against nature's grandeur. However, it is impossible to overlook one of Cornwall's engineering marvels - The Treffry Viaduct/Aqueduct. Built by Joseph Thomas Treffry between 1839 and 1842, this monumental structure spans across Luxulyan Valley. Rising 90 feet high and stretching for an impressive 670 feet long, it served as both a tramway and carried water through its high-level leat system. Today recognized as a Scheduled Monument, this viaduct holds historical significance as Cornwall's first large civil engineering masterpiece of its kind. This remarkable photograph was skillfully captured by Herbert Hughes; preserving not only moments frozen in time but also celebrating Cornwall's countryside beauty intertwined with its industri
