EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1910, depicts a traditional Padda barge in full sail on the waters of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during the British colonial era. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the past when such watercraft were an essential mode of transport for carrying cargo along the country's rivers and waterways. The barge, with its large, billowing sails, cuts through the water effortlessly, leaving a gentle ripple in its wake. The trees lining the riverbank, with their lush green foliage, provide a striking contrast to the wooden barge and add to the serene beauty of the scene. The people in the photograph, some standing on the shore and others on board the barge, add a sense of scale and human connection to the image. The Padda barge was a common sight in Ceylon during the colonial period, and its use predates the arrival of the British. These barges were used to transport a variety of goods, including rice, timber, and other commodities, from inland areas to the coastal ports for export. The long poles, or "paddas," used to propel the barges through the water, can be seen in the foreground of the photograph. This photograph is a testament to the rich maritime history of Ceylon and the important role that traditional watercraft played in the transportation of goods during the colonial era. It is a reminder of a bygone era, when the rhythm of life was dictated by the ebb and flow of the tides and the gentle sway of the boats on the water.
