The Boer War was a complex conflict between the British Empire and two independent Boer states, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. One of the tactics used by the Boers was the employment of Kaffir spies, or local informants, to gather intelligence on British military movements and plans. In this photograph, a group of these spies are brought before General Wolfe Murray for interrogation.
