The Officers of the Terra Nova, 1912 Voyage, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
The Officers of the Terra Nova, 1912 Voyage; Left to right - Mr. Dennistoun, Bo sun Cheetham, Lt. Rennick, Paymaster Drake, Engineer Williams, Lt. Pennell, Lt. Bruce, Biologist Lillie, (1913). James R Dennistoun (in charge of mules on the ship), boatswain Alfred Cheetham, Lieutenant Henry Rennick, assistant paymaster Francis Drake, chief engine room artificer William Williams, Lieutenant Harry Pennell, Lieutenant Wilfred M Bruce, biologist Dennis Lillie. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. The Officers of the Terra Nova, 1912 Voyage
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the brave men who embarked on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Taken in 1913 by artist Herbert Ponting, this image showcases the diverse group of individuals who formed part of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). From left to right, we see Mr. Dennistoun overseeing the mules on board, boatswain Alfred Cheetham standing tall, Lieutenant Henry Rennick exuding determination, assistant paymaster Francis Drake with an air of responsibility, chief engine room artificer William Williams displaying his expertise, Lieutenant Harry Pennell radiating confidence, Lieutenant Wilfred M Bruce embodying leadership qualities and biologist Dennis Lillie ready for scientific exploration. This photograph not only highlights their individual roles but also symbolizes their collective ambition to continue Scott's scientific work and be the first to reach the South Pole. Unfortunately, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies during their return journey from the Pole, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were later recovered eight months later. "The Officers of The Terra Nova" serves as a poignant reminder of these courageous men who ventured into uncharted territories in pursuit of knowledge and discovery. It immortalizes their spirit and sacrifice while honoring Captain Scott's enduring legacy as one of history's greatest explorers.
