EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the University of Cambridge SPRI, we are transported back to a moment in time during the British Arctic Air Route Expedition of 1930-31. The image captures four expedition members - Edward Bingham, Alfred Stephenson, Quintin Riley, and N. H. D Aeth - inside their wooden base hut. As we delve into this frozen world through the lens of photographer Henry Iliffe Cozens, our eyes are drawn to the scene unfolding before us. Bingham lies comfortably in a lower bunk, engrossed in his reading material. His face illuminated by the soft glow emanating from a nearby lantern. At a table nearby sits Stephenson, his gaze fixed upon an intricately detailed map spread out before him. With furrowed brows and intense concentration etched on his features, he navigates through uncharted territories with unwavering determination. Meanwhile, Riley occupies another seat at the same table but is lost in his own literary world. Absorbed by words written on weathered pages that have undoubtedly traveled far distances alongside these intrepid explorers. Lastly, D Aeth finds solace in yet another lower bunk as he immerses himself within the pages of a book. Perhaps seeking respite from the harsh Arctic conditions outside or finding comfort within stories that transport him beyond icy landscapes. This photograph serves as both a visual testament to their shared journey and an intimate glimpse into each individual's personal escape amidst arduous circumstances. It reminds us of their resilience and dedication to scientific exploration despite facing unforgiving elements day after day. Through this single snapshot frozen in time forevermore, we bear witness to not just physical endurance but also mental fortitude – qualities that define those who dare venture into uncharted realms for knowledge and discovery.
