EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two intriguing mammals, the Sunda stink badger (Mydaus javanensis) and the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). The image is taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The Sunda stink badger, native to Southeast Asia, is a unique member of the weasel family. With its short, powerful limbs and stocky build, it resembles a badger more than its badger-like name suggests. Its most distinctive feature, however, is its ability to emit a foul-smelling spray from its anal glands as a defense mechanism. The striped skunk, on the other hand, is a well-known North American species. Its iconic black and white stripes serve as a warning to predators of its potent spray. Skunks are omnivores, feeding on a variety of plants, insects, and small animals. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by J. Joyeau, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art showcases the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history illustrations of the time.
