EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during a hose laying drill by the Corps of Canadian Fire-fighters (CCCF) stationed in England during World War II. Established in 1940, the CCCF, also known as the Volunteer Corps of Canadian Fire-fighters, was a military unit consisting of over 1,500 Canadian firefighters who volunteered to serve overseas. The corps was deployed to Britain to provide emergency firefighting support to the British military and civilians in the event of air raids and other emergencies. In this image, we see a group of Canadian firefighters meticulously laying out fire hoses in a neat, organized fashion. The hoses, coiled and ready for use, are arranged in perfect rows, while the firefighters work together to secure them in place. The scene exudes a sense of discipline, teamwork, and preparation, reflecting the importance of the CCCF's role in the war effort. The Corps of Canadian Fire-fighters played a crucial role in the defense of Britain during the war. Their presence not only provided essential firefighting services but also boosted morale among the British population, who were grateful for the support from their Canadian allies. The CCCF remained in England until 1945, when they were demobilized and returned home to Canada as heroes. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave Canadian firefighters during World War II, who left their homes to support the war effort on the 2nd front, and the vital role they played in ensuring the safety and security of the British people during a time of great need.
