EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the diverse and distinctive uniforms of Russian military personnel during the First World War. From left to right, we see a Don Cossack, an Ural Cossack, a field artillery officer, a Kuban Cossack, and a field artilleryman. Dating from the period 1914-1918, this image offers a fascinating glimpse into the wartime attire of the Russian army. The Don Cossack, hailing from the Don River region, is easily identified by his tall, fur-trimmed hat, known as a shapka-usnitsa. His uniform consists of a blue tunic with golden stripes and a red sash. The Ural Cossack, from the Ural Mountains, wears a similar hat, but his tunic is green with yellow stripes and a yellow sash. The field artillery officer, dressed in a double-breasted, green tunic with red lapels and gold braid, stands out amongst his comrades. His head is adorned with a peaked cap, a common headgear for officers in the Russian army during this time. The Kuban Cossack, from the Kuban River region, is easily recognizable by his distinctive, tall, fur hat, known as a shapka-kalpak. His uniform consists of a blue tunic with red stripes and a red sash. Lastly, the field artilleryman, dressed in a blue tunic with red lapels and brass buttons, completes the lineup. His head is protected by a steel helmet, a necessary addition to the battlefield during the First World War. This photograph not only showcases the unique uniforms of the various Russian military units during the First World War but also highlights the rich history and diversity of the Russian military during this tumultuous period.
