EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and destruction of the First World War, a French soldier takes a moment of respite, leaning against a damaged building with a puzzled expression on his face. The worn-out soldier, dressed in a blue uniform with stripes indicating his rank as a corporal or sergeant, holds a walking stick in one hand and a bandaged knee in the other. His helmet sits at his feet, and puttees peek out from beneath his trousers. A nearby wall bears the scars of a shell explosion, with broken glass and damaged pantiles scattered on the ground. The guttering is torn from the roof, and water pours out, adding to the soldier's discomfort. He looks down at his knee, still damp from the water, and shakes his head in confusion. A newspaper lies at his feet, and he reaches for it, hoping to find some sense in the chaos. But his mind is clouded, not by the complexities of war, but by the effects of his constant consumption of cheap wine, or "plonk," as he's had nothing else to drink since the war began. The soldier's perplexed gaze is directed at an enigma symbol etched into the wall, a reminder of the many unsolved mysteries of the war. But for now, the only enigma that matters to him is how he'll make it through another day with his wits about him and his knee healed, all while dealing with the gout that plagues him after one too many glasses of Pinard.
