Saturns rings, Cassini image

Saturns rings, Cassini image. The rings consist of particles of nearly pure water ice and meteoric dust and span almost 300, 000 kilometres. The largest gap in the rings is the Cassini Division, which separates the A (outer) and B (inner) rings. The smaller gap within the A ring is the Encke Gap. Pandora, one of Saturns moons, is seen as a minute speck above the A ring at upper left. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. This image was taken by Cassinis wide-angle camera on the 13th April 2007 at a distance of 1.8 million kilometres from Saturn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Saturn's rings, as seen through the lens of the Cassini spacecraft. The rings, composed of particles made up of water ice and meteoric dust, stretch across an astonishing distance of almost 300,000 kilometers. Amongst this vast expanse, we can observe two significant gaps: the Cassini Division separating the outer A ring from the inner B ring, and within it lies a smaller gap known as the Encke Gap. In this image taken on April 13th, 2007, by Cassini's wide-angle camera at a distance of 1.8 million kilometers from Saturn itself, we are treated to a rare sight. Above the A ring at upper left is Pandora - one of Saturn's moons - appearing as a tiny speck against this cosmic backdrop. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft embarked on its mission in 1997 with a specific goal to explore and study Saturn along with its magnificent rings and intriguing moons like Pandora. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our solar system and beyond. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image captured by Science Photo Library's talented team, we are reminded once again that there is so much more to discover in our vast universe – mysteries waiting to be unraveled and wonders awaiting exploration.
