AG Meek on Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff, 1912. *A SHOE business in its centenary year may be forced to close its founding shop to make way for a convenience store. The family-owned AG Meek shop on Albany Road, Cardiff, has been given notice to leave when its lease expires in May this year n which would bring an end to exactly 100 years of trading on the street. Planning permission is being sought by landlords Tudor Jenkins (Properties) to demolish the store and redevelop the site as a convenience store, with three flats above it. It is not known which company could occupy the premises as yet. Cardiff Council leader Rodney Berman, who also represents voters in the area, pledged yesterday to fight the application. The store was founded in 1912 by Albert George Meek and is still run by David Meek, his grandson. Owner Mr Meek said that it was not yet a iforegone conclusioni that it would close. 9th, January, 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the iconic AG Meek shoe shop on Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff in 1912. As this family-owned business celebrates its centenary year, it faces an uncertain future. The lease for the founding shop is set to expire in May, and landlords Tudor Jenkins (Properties) have plans to demolish the store and replace it with a convenience store and three flats above. The potential closure of AG Meek would mark the end of an era, as it has been serving customers on this street for exactly 100 years. David Meek, grandson of founder Albert George Meek, currently runs the business and remains hopeful that they can find a way to continue trading. Cardiff Council leader Rodney Berman has vowed to fight against this redevelopment application. Local residents are also rallying behind AG Meek's cause, recognizing its historical significance within their community. As we look at this photograph today, we are reminded of the rich history embedded in these walls. From humble beginnings in 1912 to becoming a beloved local institution over generations, AG Meek holds memories for countless customers who have walked through its doors seeking quality footwear. While uncertainty looms over its future fate, let us cherish this image as a testament to resilience and longevity amidst changing times.
