EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Donald Cameron of Lochiel (1835-1905), the 25th Chief of Clan Cameron, resplendently dressed in the traditional Highland attire of his ancestors. The photograph, taken likely in the late 19th century, showcases Donald in full regalia, including a tartan kilt, plaid, sporran, and bonnet, adorned with a silver brooch displaying the Clan Cameron crest. Donald Cameron was born on February 21, 1835, at his family seat, Lochiel House, in Glen Nevis, Scotland. He became the Chief of Clan Cameron following the death of his father, Hector, in 1853. Under his leadership, the clan faced numerous challenges, including the clearance of their lands during the Highland Clearances, and the loss of traditional ways of life. Despite these hardships, Donald remained committed to preserving the history and traditions of his clan. He was a prominent figure in the Scottish Gaelic revival movement, and worked to promote the use of the Gaelic language and the preservation of traditional music and dance. He also played a role in the establishment of the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh, which honors the Scottish soldiers who died in both World Wars. Donald Cameron passed away on October 2, 1905, leaving behind a rich legacy as a champion of Scottish culture and tradition. This photograph serves as a reminder of his important role in preserving the history and heritage of the Clan Cameron and the Scottish Highlands.
