EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Three Heathen Heroes Die Drei Guten Haiden Heroes" takes us back to 1516, showcasing a remarkable woodcut artwork by Hans Burgkmair. The first state of this piece, as documented by Hollstein, measures approximately 7 5/8 inches by 5 3/16 inches (194 x 131 cm). The German artist from Augsburg, Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531), collaborated with block cutter Jost de Negker (1480-1546) to create this stunning series of six woodcuts. In this particular print, we see three heroic figures standing side by side in all their glory. On the left stands Hector, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar - fully armored and exuding strength and power. Each hero holds his coat of arms firmly as a symbol of their noble lineage and military prowess. This artwork is a testament to Burgkmair's exceptional talent in capturing historical figures with great precision and detail. The composition beautifully showcases these legendary heroes who have left an indelible mark on history.
