The Midwinters Day Feast, June 1908, (1909)

The Midwinters Day Feast, June 1908, (1909). The midwinter feast at the Nimrod Hut, Cape Royds. Ernest Shackleton is at the head of the table. On the left side are Armytage, Brocklehurst, Marston, Day, Adams and Marshall; on the right, Roberts, Mackay, Murray, Wild, Joyce, Mawson. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Midwinters Day Feast in June 1908 at the Nimrod Hut, Cape Royds. At the head of a long wooden table sits the renowned Anglo-Irish explorer, Ernest Shackleton, his presence commanding attention from all those gathered around him. On his left side are Armytage, Brocklehurst, Marston, Day, Adams, and Marshall; while on his right sit Roberts, Mackay, Murray, Wild Joyce and Mawson. Ernest Shackleton's significance in Antarctic exploration is undeniable. During his second expedition to the icy continent from 1907 to 1909, he achieved an extraordinary feat by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S - a mere 97 geographical miles away from the elusive South Pole. This remarkable advancement marked the largest progress towards this uncharted territory in history. Not only did Shackleton's team make groundbreaking strides towards conquering Antarctica's vastness but they also conquered Mount Erebus – scaling its treacherous slopes despite it being one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. For these incredible accomplishments during his expeditions and contributions to scientific knowledge about Antarctica's sub-antarctic region through oceanographic researches during his final journey in later years; King Edward VII knighted Shackleton for bravery and determination. Tragically though Ernest Shackleton passed away prematurely at just 47 years old during that last voyage. However, the legacy he left behind as a fearless explorer continues to inspire generations of adventurers who seek to unravel nature's mysteries within our planet’s most extreme environments.
