In the FA Barclays Premiership match of the previous seasons, Osman, a local lad and an academy graduate, etched his name into Everton folklore with a stunning strike that set the tone for a hard-fought victory. However, this encounter pitted Everton against their London rivals, West Ham United. The first half was a tense affair, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the back of the net. In the 53rd minute, Osman received the ball just outside the West Ham penalty area. With a quick turn and a deft touch, he created enough space to unleash a powerful shot that left Shaka Hislop, the West Ham goalkeeper, rooted to the spot.
