EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch captures the last moments of the historic Saracens Head Inn on Snow Hill in London, as it was being demolished in 1863. The Saracens Head was a celebrated tavern and coaching establishment that stood on the north side of Snow Hill, near Newgate. It was renowned for its rich history and character, having served travelers and locals alike for generations. The inn's demolition was a significant event in the city's history, as it marked the beginning of the construction of the Holborn Viaduct. The new structure would bring about major changes to the area, and the old Saracens Head would be lost forever. Despite efforts to preserve its memory, the new Saracens Head Hotel that was erected on Snow Hill in its place bears little resemblance to its predecessor. The old inn was a charming, rustic building with a distinctive character, while the new one is a modern, impersonal structure. The sketch provides a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when travel was more challenging, and inns like the Saracens Head played a vital role in the lives of those on the move. It is a testament to the enduring allure of history and the importance of preserving the stories of the past.
