EDITORS COMMENTS
In this lithograph print, we witness a pivotal moment in history as Henry II of England grants Dermot MacMorrough the authority to raise an army. Painted by James William Edmund Doyle in 1864, the artwork beautifully captures the essence of the 12th century. Henry II, the first Plantagenet king of England, ruled with great power and influence from 1154. In this scene, he is depicted bestowing his blessing upon Dermot MacMorrough, banished king of Leinster. Seeking to reclaim his crown, Dermot seeks assistance from Henry and pledges his unwavering loyalty in return. The artist skillfully portrays these two historical figures through their regal attire and commanding presence. Henry's majestic cloak drapes over him as he sits on his throne while Dermot stands before him with humility and determination. This meeting between kings would prove significant for both nations involved. As a result of their alliance, English forces were mobilized to invade Ireland for the very first time. This marked a turning point in Irish history as part of the country came under English control. Doyle's lithograph not only showcases remarkable artistic talent but also serves as a visual gateway into an important chapter in medieval history. The colors are richly vibrant and bring life to every detail within the composition. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of how past events continue to shape our present reality. It is through such works that we can appreciate and understand our shared heritage more deeply.
