On view at the Girl Guides Association Headquarters is the Standard of St George

On view at the Girl Guides Association Headquarters is the Standard of St George, to be presented to former Chief Commissioner for England, Mrs Percy Birley by the Princess Royal, after which it will be given to the present Chief Commissioner Lady Cochrane. The standard was started in 1937, but discontinued until 1947 and it represents 6, 000 hours of work. Most of it was done by the Hon Miss Rachel Kay Shuttleworth, for 32 years County Commissioner for Lancashire, N.E. and it is considered one of the most impressive pieces of needlework of the 20th century. Looking at the standard from left to right are Lady Cochrane, Chief Commisisioner for England, Mrs Birley, now County Commissioner for Lancasshire and the Hon Miss Kay Shuttleworth.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a momentous occasion at the Girl Guides Association Headquarters, where the exquisite Standard of St George is proudly displayed. This magnificent piece of needlework, representing 6,000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, was started in 1937 but discontinued until 1947. It now stands as one of the most impressive examples of needlework from the 20th century. In this historic snapshot, we see three remarkable women admiring the standard. On the left is Lady Cochrane, Chief Commissioner for England, who will receive this prestigious honor after it is presented to former Chief Commissioner Mrs Percy Birley by none other than Princess Royal herself. Mrs Birley has since become County Commissioner for Lancashire and stands beside Lady Cochrane with pride. However, it is Miss Rachel Kay Shuttleworth who deserves special recognition. For an astounding period of 32 years as County Commissioner for Lancashire N. E. , she dedicated her time and talent to create this awe-inspiring masterpiece. The majority of its intricate details were brought to life by her skilled hands. As we gaze upon this photograph captured on October 28th, 1949 (reference number: 31259), we are reminded not only of the immense effort put into creating such a work but also how these exceptional women have shaped and influenced the Girl Guides movement throughout history.
