EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration is taken from George Brookshaw's Pomona Britannica, published in 1817, and showcases a delightful array of gooseberry varieties. Gooseberries, a popular fruit in the United Kingdom and Europe, have been cultivated for centuries for their unique tart flavor and versatile uses. The illustration features twelve distinct gooseberry varieties, each with its own distinctive characteristics. In the center, the common or red gooseberry (Ribes grossularia) is depicted with its typical round, bright red berries. Surrounding it are a variety of other gooseberries, each with their unique colorations and shapes. The yellow gooseberry, or Paxianella, is illustrated with its yellow-green berries, while the white or wax gooseberry, or Ribes hirsutum, is shown with its white, waxy berries. The illustration also includes the currant gooseberry, or Ribes x oblongifolium, which is characterized by its elongated, currant-like berries. Other varieties depicted include the black gooseberry, or Ribes nigrum, the green gooseberry, or Ribes hirtellum, the dwarf gooseberry, or Ribes petraeum, and the Prussian gooseberry, or Ribes uva-crispa. Each variety is meticulously rendered, highlighting their unique features and intricacies. This illustration not only serves as a beautiful representation of the diverse range of gooseberry varieties, but also as a testament to the horticultural knowledge and artistic skill of the time. The intricate details and precise labeling demonstrate the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world during the Victorian era. Today, this illustration remains a valuable resource for horticulturists, historians, and anyone with an appreciation for the natural world and its beauty.
