A. B. Cheetham, (The boatswain of the Terra Nova), c1910–1913, (1913)

A.B. Cheetham, (The boatswain of the Terra Nova), c1910– 1913, (1913). Alfred Cheetham (1866-1918) was a member of several Antarctic expeditions. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures A. B. Cheetham, the boatswain of the Terra Nova, during the historic British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Alfred Cheetham, a seasoned member of multiple Antarctic expeditions, joined Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team on their final quest to conquer the South Pole. Departing from London on 1 June 1910, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed not only to reach the geographic South Pole but also to continue important scientific research in Antarctica. The diverse group included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology and physics. On 17 January 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and battling blizzards along their arduous journey towards the pole with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans by his side; Scott discovered that they had been beaten by a Norwegian expedition led by Amundsen. Despite this setback and facing dwindling supplies due to unexpected delays caused by harsh weather conditions; Scott's unwavering determination pushed him forward. Tragically though at end of March that year Scott and his remaining team members perished. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle for survival. This remarkable photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing an invaluable visual record of one of history's most extraordinary explorations into Earth's frozen frontier.
