7341539 Near Yokohama, Japan, 1870 (watercolour) by Butt, James Henry (fl.1868); 17.2x12.4 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Lt. James Henry Butt
A delicately lit country view, probably towards evening, with the sun coming from the left (west), rural buildings on the right and Japanese figures walking away from Butt in the lane. That on the right is presumably a farm worker in a broad straw hat carrying buckets on a pole over his shoulder, with the smaller figure of a woman in a kimono accompanying him. The bulbous structures under the trees at the corner of the lane may be hay ricks. PAJ2059 and PAJ2092 are also of Yokohama, which was the port that Butt's ship Sylvia used as its Japanese base of operations.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour print captures a serene country scene near Yokohama, Japan in 1870. The delicate lighting suggests that it is evening, with the sun casting a warm glow from the left. In the foreground, Japanese figures can be seen walking away down a rural lane, adding a sense of movement and life to the peaceful landscape.
The details in the painting are exquisite - from the traditional farm worker wearing a broad straw hat and carrying buckets on his shoulder, to the woman in a kimono accompanying him. The bulbous structures under the trees are likely hay ricks, adding to the bucolic charm of the setting.
Yokohama was an important port for Lt. James Henry Butt's ship 'Sylvia', serving as its Japanese base of operations. This painting is one of several by Butt depicting scenes from Yokohama during this time period.
Overall, this artwork beautifully captures a moment in time in rural Japan during the 19th century. The colors and details bring to life a tranquil countryside setting that is both captivating and nostalgic.
