EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th-century portrait captures the elegant and distinguished appearance of Charles-Claude Flahaut de la Billarderie, Comte d'Angiviller (1730-1809). The Count, who served as Director of the Batiments du Roi (Royal Buildings) in France during the late 18th century, is depicted in this artwork by the renowned French painter Joseph-Siffred Duplessis (1725-1802). Dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, Angiviller sits confidently on an ornate armchair, adorned with intricate lace and gold buttons. His clothing, made of fine fabrics, is a testament to his high social status. The Count's posture and attire are not the only elements that draw the viewer's attention. He proudly wears several medals on his chest, signifying his numerous honors and accomplishments. The cross on his chest is a symbol of his religious beliefs. The interior of the room, with its rich furnishings and elegant decor, further emphasizes Angiviller's wealth and power. This portrait, which dates from around 1780 to 1789, is now housed in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. It offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the European aristocracy during the late 18th century. As a forerunner of the Neoclassical style, Duplessis' portraits were highly sought after by the European elite, making this artwork an important addition to any collection of European art from the period.
