Amidst the chaos and carnage of the Western Front during World War I, this poignant and thought-provoking cartoon captures the bitter reality of the conflict between French and German soldiers. Dated 1916, the image depicts a French soldier, clad in a blue uniform and wearing a pointed helmet, thrusting a bayonet into a German soldier, who lies on the ground in brown uniform and helmet, with a look of shock and disbelief on his face. The French soldier, with a smug expression, informs his adversary that he has sung the socialist Internationale for twenty long years.
