EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is taken from Plate 26 of Ranarum, a comprehensive work on natural history by August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof, published between 1758 and 1763. The top left figure showcases a detailed and intricately rendered Toad (Anura: Bufo), a member of the Lissamphibia class and the order Anura, which includes over 6,000 known species. Toads are characterized by their dry, warty skin, which helps them absorb water and moisture from their environment. This illustration, created during the 18th century, showcases the Toad's unique features, including its large, bulging eyes, wide mouth, and distinctive parotoid glands, which produce a toxic secretion. The illustration is an engraving, with the original drawing believed to be in watercolor. The Sauropsida classification, which includes both reptiles and amphibians, was established during the late 18th century, and this Toad illustration is an excellent example of the naturalistic and detailed depictions of animals that emerged during this period. August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof (1705-1759) was a German naturalist and physician, and his work, Ranarum, was one of the most influential natural history publications of the 18th century. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous observation and recording of the natural world during this era, providing valuable insights into the biology and taxonomy of Toads and other amphibians.
