This photograph showcases No. 3408 Ophir, an Atbara Class 4-4-0 steam locomotive, built in the early 20th century in 1901. The Atbara Class, not to be confused with the Atbara Railway Company, was a significant group of locomotives that served the Great Western Railway (GWR) in England. No. 3408, originally named Ophir, was one of the earliest members of this class. Its distinctive design, featuring a Belpaire firebox and outside frame construction, made it an efficient and powerful addition to the GWR fleet. The locomotive's impressive dimensions include a length of 52 feet 3 inches and a weight of 65 tons. In 1907, the locomotive was renamed Killarney, a name it would keep until its retirement from service. This photograph, taken at an unknown location, captures the essence of the steam era, with the billowing smoke and the gleaming metalwork of the engine. The Atbara Class locomotives were known for their versatility and reliability, serving various roles on the GWR network, including passenger and freight services. No. 3408 Killarney, with its rich history and striking appearance, is a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the steam age. Today, this photograph serves as a reminder of the bygone era of steam railways and the role these magnificent machines played in shaping the transportation landscape of the past.
