Surgery in hyperbaric chamber, Russia
Surgery in a hyoperbaric chamber. View of a chamber used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The lights above an operating table inside the chamber may be seen through the window at left. In this kind of hard chamber the pressure may be raised to up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal). The atmosphere is 21% oxygen, although patients in the chamber can breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. HBOT was originally used for decompression sickness in divers, but it has been found useful in carbon monoxide poisoning, in the treatment of gas gangrene and may be of some use in cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Photographed at the Research Institute for Experimental and Clinical Surgery, Moscow, in 1978

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique moment in medical history - surgery taking place inside a hyperbaric chamber in Russia. The image showcases the interior of the chamber, with lights above an operating table visible through a window on the left. This particular hard chamber is capable of increasing pressure up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal), providing an environment where patients can breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. Originally used for treating decompression sickness in divers, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has proven effective in various other conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and gas gangrene. It has also shown potential benefits for cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis patients. Taken at the Research Institute for Experimental and Clinical Surgery in Moscow during 1978, this photograph offers a glimpse into the advancements made by Russian scientists and doctors during that time. The controlled atmosphere within the hyperbaric chamber allowed surgeons to perform intricate procedures while ensuring optimal oxygenation levels. The monochrome composition adds to its historical appeal, emphasizing both the scientific nature of this breakthrough treatment and its significance within twentieth-century medicine. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of innovative solutions to improve healthcare outcomes.
