The first British troops to enter Cherbourg were four RAF members of an Embarkation Unit

The first British troops to enter Cherbourg were four RAF members of an Embarkation Unit. They entered the town with the Americans and took up their headquarters by the quayside, so that as soon as port facilities are available, they will be able to handle all RAF personnel and supplies arriving at our first Continental port.
Leader of the Party is 54 years old Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown, DFC of the last war, who was also Embarkation Officer in Cherbourg in 1939 and 1940 in an office 20 yards from where he is now at work.
Picture shows: The four men on the roof of their headquarters overlooking the port. In the background is the wreckage of the Gare Maritime and Quai de France blasted by air attacks. On the right is a shattered German pillbox. Near the wrecked buildings is a Red Cross unit undamaged, believed to have been
placed near the docks to prevent the target being attacked.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The First British Troops Enter Cherbourg: A Historic Moment Captured". In this photo print, we witness a significant moment in history as the first British troops enter Cherbourg alongside their American counterparts. Leading the party is Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown, a seasoned veteran who had previously served as the Embarkation Officer in Cherbourg during the years 1939 and 1940. The image showcases four RAF members of an Embarkation Unit standing proudly on the roof of their headquarters overlooking the port. Behind them lies a scene of destruction, with the Gare Maritime and Quai de France reduced to wreckage by relentless air attacks. To their right stands a shattered German pillbox, serving as a stark reminder of past conflicts. Amidst this devastation, one notable detail catches our attention - an undamaged Red Cross unit strategically placed near the docks to deter further attacks on this vital target. Each member of this brave quartet has his own unique background and story. Flying Officer A. G. R. Bremner hails from Hudson Bay, Canada where he was once involved in fur trading; Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown DFC brings his experience as an ex-mining executive from Vancouver, British Columbia; Flying Officer G. H. M O Farrell joins them after serving in Royal Artillery at Portsmouth; and Sergeant R. Lawrence adds his expertise gained while working as an engineer's accountant at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. This photograph serves not only as a visual record but also encapsulates the spirit and determination that these men brought with them to Cherbourg on that fateful day - ready to handle all RAF personnel and supplies arriving at our first Continental port.
