EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later known as the Queen Mother, was captured by renowned British photographer Claude Harris around 1922. Elizabeth, born on August 4, 1900, was the eldest daughter of the 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Her striking beauty and graceful demeanor were evident even in her youth, making her a popular figure in high society circles. At the time this photograph was taken, Elizabeth was still unmarried, but her future was already shaping up to be extraordinary. In 1923, she would meet and fall in love with the Duke of York, later King George VI, during a shooting party at the Sandringham Estate. Their marriage in 1923 would unite the House of Windsor and the House of Bowes-Lyon, and Elizabeth would become the Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, a role she would fulfill with dedication and poise until her husband's death in 1952. Elizabeth's reign as Queen Mother was marked by her unwavering support of her eldest daughter, Elizabeth II, who would eventually succeed her. Her strong sense of duty, compassion, and resilience during World War II endeared her to the British people, and her popularity endured throughout her long life. Elizabeth passed away on March 30, 2002, at the age of 101, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a beloved monarch and devoted mother.
