Experiment to calculate the speed of sound in air, Paris, 1822, (c1880). Artist: Robert Brown
Experiment to calculate the speed of sound in air, Paris, 1822, (c1880). In 1822 the French appointed a commission to find the speed of sound in air. Two hills near Paris were chosen for the experiment, at Villejuif and Montlhery. On each hill a gun was discharged. Observers on the other hill, by noting the time of the flash and the time at which they heard the report, calculated the speed to be 1, 118.152 feet (340.8m) per second. Gay-Lussac, Humboldt and Bouvard were at Montlhery. Arago, Mathieu and Prony were at Villejuif. From Science for All by Robert Brown. (London, c1880)

Experiment to calculate the speed of sound in air, Paris, 1822
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant scientific endeavor from the 19th century. In this image, we witness pioneering scientists and physicists like Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, Robert Brown, Arago, Mathieu, Prony, Humboldt and Bouvard engaging in an experiment to determine the speed of sound in air. The scene unfolds on two hills near Paris - Villejuif and Montlhery - where observers eagerly await the discharge of guns. As flashes illuminate the sky above each hill, these dedicated individuals meticulously record the time it takes for them to hear the resulting reports. Through their calculations and observations made across vast distances, they arrive at an astonishing conclusion: sound travels through air at a remarkable speed of 1,118.152 feet (340.8m) per second. This photograph not only showcases these brilliant minds but also highlights their dedication to pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of nature's phenomena. The dangerous yet exhilarating pursuit of knowledge is palpable as these men challenge themselves amidst breathtaking geographical features. As we delve into this monochrome snapshot from history's annals, we are reminded of how science transcends borders and unites people from different countries under one common goal: unraveling mysteries that shape our world. This print serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity while paying homage to those who fearlessly ventured into uncharted territories for progress's sake.
