EDITORS COMMENTS
Queen Boudica of the Iceni Tribe, a formidable warrior queen who led a rebellion against the occupying Roman forces in Ancient Britain around 60-61 AD. With her flowing red locks and fierce expression, Boudica commanded respect and fear from her people and the Romans alike. In this powerful image, she is depicted in the midst of battle, wielding a large shield emblazoned with the symbols of her tribe and brandishing a spear. Her chariot, adorned with tribal decorations, stands ready behind her. Boudica's uprising began in response to the heavy-handed Roman taxation and the public flogging of her husband and two daughters. The queen rallied the Iceni and other British tribes, and together they sacked the Roman towns of Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium (London), and Verulamium (St Albans). The Roman forces, led by Suetonius Paulinus, eventually caught up with Boudica's army at the Battle of Watling Street. Despite initial success, the British forces were ultimately defeated, and Boudica is said to have taken her own life rather than be taken captive. This evocative print captures the spirit of Boudica, a legendary figure in the history of Anglia and the East of Britain. Her story continues to inspire and fascinate historians and scholars, and her image remains a symbol of tribal pride and resistance.
