Arithmetica by Diophantus of Alexandria C015 / 5585

Arithmetica by Diophantus of Alexandria. This book is part of a series written by the Greek mathematician Diophantus of Alexandria, who lived in the 3rd century, that deal with solving algebraic equations. An annotation by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the margin of Arithmetica claimed he could prove that no three positive integers a, b, and c can satisfy the equation a to the power of n plus b to the power of n is equal to c to the power of n. His proof was never found and the equation became known as Fermats Last Theorem. It was finally solved in 1995. This is the cover of the 1621 edition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the cover of the 1621 edition of "Arithmetica" by Diophantus of Alexandria, a significant book in the history of mathematics. Written by the Greek mathematician Diophantus during the 3rd century, this series delves into solving algebraic equations. However, what makes this particular edition even more intriguing is an annotation made by French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in its margin. Fermat's note boldly claimed that he had a proof for an equation stating that no three positive integers could satisfy the equation: a to the power of n plus b to the power of n equals c to the power of n. This unsolved problem became famously known as Fermat's Last Theorem and puzzled mathematicians for centuries. It wasn't until 1995 that British mathematician Andrew Wiles finally cracked this enigma, providing a solution to Fermat's Last Theorem after years of dedicated research. Wiles' achievement marked a monumental moment in mathematical history and brought closure to one of mathematics' most enduring mysteries. The image itself captures not only historical significance but also exudes an air of antiquity with its classical design elements and intricate text on display. As we gaze upon this frontispiece from centuries past, we are reminded not only of Diophantus' contributions as the father of algebra but also how mathematical puzzles can captivate minds across generations.
