Known as 'Darwin's Bulldog' for his staunch defense of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, Huxley was a prolific writer, researcher, and educator who made significant contributions to several scientific fields, including zoology, anthropology, and comparative anatomy. Born in Ealing, Middlesex, England, Huxley's early education was limited due to his family's financial struggles. However, his natural curiosity and intelligence led him to teach himself various subjects, including Latin, Greek, and mathematics. He eventually earned a scholarship to study at the Royal School of Mines in London, where he excelled in science. Huxley's scientific career began in earnest when he was appointed as a professor of natural history at the Royal School of Mines in 1854.
