EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1956 at Kingskerswell, captures the majestic No. 7018 Drysllwyn Castle of the Great Western Railway (GWR) 4-6-0 Castle class locomotive in its prime. Built in 1949, Drysllwyn Castle was one of the last Castle class locomotives to roll off the production line before the introduction of diesel and electric trains. The Castle class locomotives were renowned for their power and elegance, and No. 7018 is no exception. Here, it proudly hauls the Torbay Express, a passenger train that once carried travelers on scenic journeys along the southwestern coast of England. The steam engine's powerful presence is evident as it belches out plumes of smoke, while the vibrant colors of the train cars contrast beautifully against the lush green landscape. The Torbay Express was a popular train service that connected the picturesque towns and resorts of Devon and Cornwall with the rest of the country. Passengers would marvel at the breathtaking views of the coastline, the rolling hills, and the charming villages as they traveled in comfort and style. The steam engine's distinctive whistle would echo through the countryside, signaling the approach of the train and the start of another exciting journey. This photograph is a testament to the romance and allure of the steam age, a time when travel was an adventure and the sights, sounds, and smells of a steam engine were a source of wonder and excitement. Today, the STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon preserves the legacy of steam locomotives like No. 7018 Drysllwyn Castle, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the engineering marvels of the past.
