EDITORS COMMENTS
In a heartwarming display of support and solidarity, Rangers Football Club paid tribute to their beloved former player, Fernando Ricksen, during the Scottish League One match against East Fife at Ibrox Stadium on January 11, 2014. The Dutch international, who spent four successful years at Rangers from 2000 to 2004, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2013, leaving him unable to move or communicate. As the clock ticked towards half time, the capacity crowd rose as one to welcome the 41-year-old hero onto the hallowed turf of Ibrox, where he had once graced with his skill and determination. Ricksen, who was pushed in a wheelchair, was met with a standing ovation and thunderous applause from the fans, who had turned out in their thousands to show their appreciation for the man who had given so much to the club. Accompanied by his wife, Veronica, and their two children, Ricksen was presented with a replica of the Scottish Cup, which Rangers had won in 2003 during his time at the club. The trophy was lifted above his head as the crowd roared with approval, and tears were shed by many as they saw the emotional scene unfold before them. Ricksen, who was a key member of the Rangers team that won three successive Scottish Premier League titles and the Scottish Cup, was visibly moved by the outpouring of love and support from the fans. The sight of the adoring crowd, many of whom had grown up watching him play, was a poignant reminder of the special bond that exists between a football club and its supporters. The tribute to Ricksen was a fitting reminder of the power of football to bring people together, to inspire and to heal. It was a moment that will live long in the memory of all those who were fortunate enough to witness it, and a testament to the enduring spirit of Rangers Football Club.
