Trachea lining, TEM C014 / 1469

Trachea lining. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a longitudinal section through the lining of the trachea (windpipe), which links the larynx (voicebox) to the lungs. The epithelial lining consists of cells that have hair-like cilia (long) on their surface and mucus-secreting glands. Mucus secreted by the glands traps debris, such as dust particles or bacteria, in the inhaled air, while the beating of the cilia moves the mucus and particles upwards out of the respiratory tract, helping to keep the lungs and airways clear and prevent infection. Clear basal bodies and mitochondria (yellow) are visible in the cell bodies. Magnification: x7000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the trachea lining, captured through a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The image reveals a longitudinal section of the windpipe's epithelial lining, which serves as a vital link between the larynx and lungs. The remarkable detail in this micrograph highlights the specialized cells that make up the trachea lining. These cells possess hair-like cilia on their surface, extending outward like delicate brushes. Additionally, mucus-secreting glands are visible, appearing as small clusters throughout the tissue. The role of these structures becomes evident upon closer examination. As inhaled air passes through our respiratory tract, debris such as dust particles or bacteria can pose potential threats to our health. However, nature has provided an ingenious defense mechanism within our trachea lining. Mucus secreted by these glands acts as a sticky trap for foreign particles present in the air we breathe. Simultaneously, the beating motion of cilia propels this mucus upwards and outwards from our respiratory system—effectively clearing any potential hazards and preventing infections from taking hold. Within each cell body lies clear basal bodies and mitochondria—a testament to their metabolic activity and energy production capabilities. This stunning TEM image offers us a glimpse into one of nature's incredible mechanisms for safeguarding our lungs and ensuring optimal respiratory function—an awe-inspiring reminder of how intricately designed our human bodies truly are.
