Pack animal as means of transport

Coloured illustration after a detail from a painting in the tomb of Khnumhotep at Beni Hassan. Egypt. It dates from around 1880 BC during the reign of Senusret 11 and shows a group of semites on a trading mission to Egypt. Amongst the items they carry is stibium from Mesopotamia which the Egyptians used in eye make up. Also depicted are tools and instruments unknown in Egypt at that time. Until around 4000BC transport on land was restricted to what humans could carry. Between 4000 and 3000 BC horses and donkeys became domesticated and were used to transport people and goods. The opening up of land transport enabled great advances to be made through migration and trade

Ancient Egypt Horses Mesopotamia Migration Trade Beni Hassan Donkeys History Of Transport Pack Animals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to ancient Egypt, specifically around 1880 BC during the reign of Senusret II. It showcases a coloured illustration derived from a detail found in the tomb of Khnumhotep at Beni Hassan. The scene depicts a group of Semites embarking on a trading mission to Egypt, carrying various items including stibium from Mesopotamia - an essential ingredient used by Egyptians for eye makeup. What makes this illustration truly remarkable is that it also reveals tools and instruments previously unknown in Egypt during that era. Until approximately 4000 BC, land transport was limited solely to what humans could carry on their backs. However, with the domestication of horses and donkeys between 4000 and 3000 BC, these pack animals became crucial means of transportation for both people and goods. The introduction of animal-powered transport revolutionized travel possibilities, leading to significant advances through migration and trade. This breakthrough opened up new horizons for cultural exchange and economic growth across ancient civilizations. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of the historical significance behind animal domestication but also how technological advancements have shaped human progress throughout history. Let us appreciate the ingenuity displayed by our ancestors as they harnessed nature's resources to forge connections between distant lands, forever altering the course of civilization.
