Nerve cell, illustration C018 / 0740

Nerve cell, or neuron, illustration. Neurons are responsible for passing information around the central nervous system (CNS) and from the CNS to the rest of the body. Each nerve cell comprises a body (top) surrounded by numerous extensions called dendrites. Dendrites collect information from other nerve cells or from sensory cells. Each neuron also has one process called an axon (bottom), which passes information to other nerve cells, or to effector cells such as muscle fibres. The axon appears segmented as it is surrounded by a myelin sheath, which contains gaps, called nodes of Ranvier. The myelin insulates the axon, allowing signals to be transmitted more quickly

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a nerve cell, also known as a neuron. Neurons play a crucial role in transmitting information throughout the central nervous system and to various parts of the body. The neuron depicted here consists of a cell body at the top, surrounded by numerous dendrites that collect information from other nerve cells or sensory cells. What makes this image even more fascinating is the presence of an axon, seen at the bottom. The axon serves as a pathway for passing information to other nerve cells or effector cells like muscle fibers. It appears segmented due to its myelin sheath, which acts as insulation and enhances signal transmission speed. This myelin sheath contains gaps called nodes of Ranvier. The orange hues in this illustration add vibrancy and depth to our understanding of neural biology and anatomy. By highlighting key components such as dendrites, axons, synapses, and Schwann cells (which produce myelin), this artwork provides valuable insights into how our nervous system functions. Claudia Stocker's masterful creation not only captures the beauty within our bodies but also educates us about these complex structures responsible for coordinating countless bodily processes. Whether you're fascinated by biology or simply intrigued by stunning scientific illustrations, this print is sure to captivate your imagination with its portrayal of neural intricacies.
