Myelinated nerve, TEM C016 / 5448

Myelinated nerve. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a myelinated nerve fibre and Schwann cell. Myelin (black) is an insulating fatty layer that surrounds the nerve fibre (axon, centre), increasing the speed at which nerve impulses travel. It is formed when Schwann cells (grey) wrap around the fibre, depositing layers of myelin between each coil. The outermost layer consists of the Schwann cells cytoplasm and is known as the neurolemma or sheath of Schwann

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a myelinated nerve, offering us a glimpse into the intricate workings of our nervous system. Taken using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), this image reveals the fascinating structure of a myelinated nerve fiber and its surrounding Schwann cell. The dark, swirling patterns represent the myelin sheath, an insulating layer composed of fatty substances. This protective coating envelops the nerve fiber at its core, known as the axon. By doing so, it significantly enhances the speed at which electrical impulses travel along the nerve. The grey areas in this micrograph depict Schwann cells—the specialized cells responsible for producing and maintaining the myelin sheath. These remarkable cells wrap themselves around the nerve fiber, meticulously depositing layers of myelin between each coil. The outermost layer formed by their cytoplasm is referred to as either neurolemma or sheath of Schwann. As we delve deeper into understanding our biological systems, images like these provide invaluable insights into how our bodies function on a microscopic level. They remind us that even within something as small as a single nerve fiber lies an intricate network that enables communication throughout our entire being. This awe-inspiring photograph was captured by P. Navarro, R. Bick, and B. Poindexter from UT Medical School/Science Photo Library—a testament to their expertise in showcasing scientific wonders through visual artistry.
