Inner ear hair cells, SEM

Inner ear hair cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sensory hair cells from the organ of Corti, in the cochlea of a mammalian inner ear. These are the outer rows of hairs and are surrounded by a fluid called the endolymph. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause these hairs to move. The movement is converted into an electrical signal, which is passed to the brain. Each V-shaped arrangement of hairs lies on the top of a single cell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of inner ear hair cells, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). These sensory hair cells reside in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of a mammalian inner ear. The outer rows of hairs depicted here are surrounded by a fluid known as endolymph. As sound waves enter the ear, they create ripples in the endolymph, causing these delicate hairs to sway and dance. This movement is then transformed into an electrical signal that travels to our brain, enabling us to perceive and interpret sounds around us. The V-shaped arrangement of these hairs sits atop individual cells, forming a remarkable structure essential for our auditory sense. Each strand represents nature's exquisite design for capturing sound vibrations with utmost precision. In this false-coloured SEM image, we witness the biological marvel that allows us to experience one of life's most cherished senses - hearing. It serves as a reminder of how our anatomy works harmoniously together to provide us with such extraordinary capabilities. This photograph from Science Photo Library not only highlights the normalcy and healthiness of these inner ear hair cells but also emphasizes their sensitivity and importance in our daily lives.
