Hyperbaric oxygenation chamber, Russia
Oxygen therapy. Room containing three chambers used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). In this kind of hard chamber the pressure may be raised to up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal). The atmosphere is 21% oxygen, although patients in the chamber can breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. HBOT was originally used for decompression sickness in divers, but it has been found useful in carbon monoxide poisoning, in the treatment of gas gangrene and may be of some use in cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Photographed at the Sechenov Medical Institute, Moscow, in 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the world of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in Russia. The image showcases a room containing three chambers used for this specialized treatment at the Sechenov Medical Institute in Moscow, taken back in 1987. In HBOT, patients are exposed to increased atmospheric pressure within these hard chambers, which can be raised up to an astonishing 6 bar or 600 kilopascals. While the atmosphere inside contains only 21% oxygen, individuals undergoing this therapy have access to breathing pure oxygen through masks. Originally developed for treating decompression sickness in divers, HBOT has proven beneficial for various other conditions as well. It has been found effective against carbon monoxide poisoning and gas gangrene while also showing potential benefits for cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis patients. The photograph offers a unique perspective on this therapeutic technique that was widely practiced during the Soviet era. Its monochrome composition adds a sense of nostalgia and historical significance to the image, reminding us of advancements made in Russian medicine during the late twentieth century. As we observe this snapshot from decades ago, it serves as a testament to the continuous progress made in medical sciences worldwide and highlights how innovative treatments like HBOT have evolved over time.
