Ernest Rutherford, sculpture C017 / 6985
Sculpture of the New Zealand-born British physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). Rutherfords work contributed to the understanding of atomic structure. In 1909 he fired helium ions (alpha particles) at thin gold foil and observed the scattering pattern. A few particles were deflected by large amounts, implying that the atomic nucleus is very small and positively charged. He won the 1908 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for showing that radioactivity was the spontaneous decay of atoms, and that the time taken for half a radioactive sample to decay was constant (the half life)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable sculpture of the renowned physicist, Ernest Rutherford. Born in New Zealand and later becoming a British citizen, Rutherford's groundbreaking work revolutionized our understanding of atomic structure. The sculpture perfectly captures his intellectual prowess and contribution to scientific knowledge. One of Rutherford's most significant experiments involved firing helium ions at thin gold foil, which resulted in an unexpected scattering pattern. This observation led him to conclude that the atomic nucleus is incredibly small and positively charged. For this groundbreaking discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908. Rutherford's research also focused on radioactivity, where he demonstrated that it was the spontaneous decay of atoms rather than an external influence. He further revealed that the time taken for half a radioactive sample to decay remains constant – known as "half-life". These findings solidified his status as one of history's greatest minds in physics. The sculpture not only pays homage to Rutherford but also symbolizes his immense contributions to nuclear physics and atomic structure. With its intricate details carved into stone, it serves as a testament to his enduring legacy. As we gaze upon this side view profile of Ernest Rutherford captured by Adam Hart-Davis from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how one individual can shape our understanding of the world through their relentless pursuit of knowledge and unwavering dedication to science.
