British physicist Prof. Peter Higgs C015 / 4139
British theoretical physicist Professor Peter Higgs (b. 1929). In 1964, Higgs predicted the existence of a new type of fundamental particle, commonly called the Higgs boson. This particle is required by many of the current Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs) which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism, the weak & the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory. Higgs is professor of theoretical physics at Edinburgh University. This photograph was taken at his office in Edinburgh in 1988. The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson was announced by scientists at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) on the 4th July 2012. Further analysis will be needed to confirm the results. Higgs, along with Francois Englert, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the Higgs field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed British physicist, Prof. Peter Higgs, in his element. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to theoretical physics, Prof. Higgs is pictured here at his office in Edinburgh University back in 1988. In 1964, Prof. Higgs made a revolutionary prediction that would forever change our understanding of the universe – the existence of a new fundamental particle now famously known as the Higgs boson. This elusive particle plays a crucial role in many Grand Unified Theories aiming to explain electromagnetism, weak and strong nuclear forces within a single unified framework. Fast forward to July 4th, 2012 when scientists at CERN announced their discovery of a particle consistent with the long-sought-after Higgs boson. Although further analysis was required to confirm these findings, it marked an extraordinary milestone in scientific history. Prof. Higgs' remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed as he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Francois Englert in 2013 for their groundbreaking work on the discovery of the Higgs field. This thought-provoking photograph showcases Prof. Peter Higgs surrounded by equations and diagrams on a blackboard – symbols representing years of dedication and intellectual pursuit towards unraveling some of nature's deepest mysteries. It serves as a testament to his profound impact on modern physics and stands as an enduring tribute to one of science's greatest minds.
