British physicist Prof. Peter Higgs C015 / 4134

British theoretical physicist Professor Peter Higgs (b. 1929). In 1964, Higgs predicted the existence of a new type of fundamental particle, commonly called the Higgs boson. This particle is required by many of the current Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs) which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism, the weak & the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory. Higgs is professor of theoretical physics at Edinburgh University. This photograph was taken at his office in Edinburgh in 1988. The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson was announced by scientists at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) on the 4th July 2012. Further analysis will be needed to confirm the results. Higgs, along with Francois Englert, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the Higgs field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of British physicist Prof. Peter Higgs, a pioneer in the field of theoretical physics. Born in 1929, Higgs made an astounding prediction in 1964 that would revolutionize our understanding of the universe - the existence of a new fundamental particle known as the Higgs boson. This elusive particle plays a crucial role in many Grand Unified Theories, which aim to unify three fundamental forces into one comprehensive theory. The photograph was taken at Prof. Higgs' office in Edinburgh University back in 1988, showcasing his dedication and passion for unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos. With glasses perched on his nose and chalk in hand, he stands before a blackboard adorned with equations and diagrams that represent his groundbreaking theories. In July 2012, scientists at CERN announced their discovery of a particle consistent with the long-sought-after Higgs boson. Although further analysis was required to confirm these findings, it ultimately led to Prof. Higgs receiving international recognition for his remarkable contributions alongside Francois Englert – they were jointly awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for their discovery of what is commonly referred to as "the God Particle". This extraordinary image serves as a testament to Prof. Peter Higgs' profound impact on modern physics and cosmology; it encapsulates both his scientific brilliance and unwavering commitment to advancing our understanding of nature's deepest secrets.
