The first British to enter Cherbourg were four RAF members of an Embarkation Unit
The first British to enter Cherbourg were four RAF members of an Embarkation Unit.
They entered the town with the Americans and took up their headquarters by the quayside, so that as soon as port facilities are available, they will be able to handle all RAF personnel and supplies
arriving at our first Continental port.
Leader of the party is 54 years old Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown, DFC cf the
last war, who was also RAF Embarkation Officer in Cherbourg
in 1939 and 1940 in an office 20 yards from where he is now at
work.
Picture shows: The four men on the roof of their headquarters overlooking the port. In the background is the wreckage of the Gare Maritime and Quai de France; blasted by air attacks. On the right is a shattered German pillbox. Near the wrecked buildings is a Red Cross unit undamaged, believed to have been placed near the docks to prevent the target being attacked.
Left to right. Flying Officer A.G.R. Bremuer, ex fur trader from Hudson Bay, Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown, D.F.C. ex mining executive from Vancouver, BC, Canada, Flying Officer G.H.M. O Farrell, ex Royal Artillery, from Portsmouth, England and Sergeant R. Lawrence, who used to be an engineers accountant at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The First British to Enter Cherbourg: A Glimpse into History". This print captures a significant moment in history as four members of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Embarkation Unit become the first British personnel to set foot in Cherbourg. Accompanying their American counterparts, these RAF heroes establish their headquarters by the bustling quayside, eagerly awaiting the availability of port facilities to efficiently handle all incoming RAF personnel and supplies. At the forefront stands Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown, a seasoned leader with an illustrious past as an RAF Embarkation Officer during 1939 and 1940. Now, he finds himself back in Cherbourg, just yards away from his former office where memories of wartime service were etched into his soul. Perched on the roof of their headquarters overlooking the port, these brave men survey a scene marred by destruction. The backdrop reveals remnants of air attacks - shattered buildings including the Gare Maritime and Quai de France bear witness to fierce battles fought for freedom. Amidst this devastation lies an undamaged Red Cross unit strategically placed near the docks to deter further attacks. The group comprises Flying Officer A. G. R. Bremuer, once a fur trader from Hudson Bay; Wing Commander Leeroy L. Brown himself hailing from Vancouver, BC; Flying Officer G. H. M O Farrell who served in the Royal Artillery; and Sergeant R. Lawrence formerly employed as an engineer's accountant at Leamington Spa. This poignant image serves as a testament to courage and resilience amidst chaos—a reminder that even amidst ruins, hope prevails.
