A German diplomatic car crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie
A German diplomatic car crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie. Circa 1965
Following the erection of the wall in 1961, diplomats and foreigners were still allowed to cross the wall, and the UK along with the other Allied powers in Berlin regularly sent troops and diplomats into the Soviet sector through Checkpoint Charlie, one of the guarded crossing points between East and West.
Both sides were entitled to do this under the authority of the four Allied powers, made after the Yalta Conference

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - a German diplomatic car crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie. Taken circa 1965, this image symbolizes the stark division between East and West during the Cold War era. Despite the erection of the wall in 1961, diplomats and foreigners were still granted permission to cross from one side to another. This particular checkpoint, known as Checkpoint Charlie, was heavily guarded and served as a vital crossing point for troops and diplomats from Allied powers such as the UK. The presence of this German diplomatic car signifies an ongoing negotiation between opposing forces amidst political tensions. It is a testament to the authority bestowed upon both sides by the four Allied powers after discussions held during the Yalta Conference. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness not only a border crossing but also glimpse into life on both sides of this infamous divide. The street scene showcases cars of that era bustling through what was once an undivided city. As we reflect on this photograph today, it serves as a reminder of how far Europe has come since those tumultuous times. It stands as evidence of resilience, diplomacy, and ultimately reunification - marking an important chapter in Germany's history and its journey towards unity.
