Throwing hot pennies to children at Honiton Fair Devon. The Hot Pennies ceremony takes place annually on the first Tuesday after 19 July in the High Street of the town, and dates back to the 13th Century. The ceremony has its roots in the practice of landed gentry taking pleasure in throwing hot pennies from windows to local peasants, a seemingly philanthropic gesture resulting in burns. The custom also had the purpose of encouraging people to travel to the town from the surrounding area to attend a subsequent fair. 20th July 1943 P029149

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of tradition and excitement in Honiton, Devon. The image showcases the annual Hot Pennies ceremony, which has been celebrated since the 13th century. Taking place on the first Tuesday after July 19th, this event draws a large crowd to the town's High Street. The origins of this custom are intriguing yet somewhat peculiar. In times gone by, wealthy landowners would delight in throwing hot pennies from their windows to local peasants below. While seemingly philanthropic, this act often resulted in burns for those eager children who scrambled to collect these heated coins. Beyond its questionable beginnings, the Hot Pennies ceremony also served another purpose - enticing people from surrounding areas to attend a subsequent fair held in Honiton. This age-old practice continues to bring joy and merriment as generations gather together. In this particular snapshot taken on July 20th, 1943 during World War II, we see a bustling scene filled with anticipation. A large group of children eagerly await their chance at catching one of these coveted hot pennies while adults watch on with smiles and amusement. The presence of the mayor adds an air of officiality to the proceedings. Preserved through time by W. J Boyland's lens, this photograph is not just a glimpse into childhood memories but also serves as a reminder of cherished customs that have stood strong throughout history.
